Burger fan? You’ll want to make sure you block out August 22nd, so you can celebrate National Burger Day in style! It’s claimed that the first burger was invented in Texas way back in the 1880s, and since then, it’s a foodstuff that has evolved massively. Whether you prefer a classic fast food joint, a gourmet offering with decadent toppings or a dirty burger-style affair where you’ll need as many napkins as you’re given chips, there are burgers in Southampton to suit all tastes. So don’t let National Burger Day pass you by – get yourself out to try one of these…
Head to the High Street for a trip to Rancho Steakhouse: a South American-inspired steakhouse where the cow theme is clear as soon as you walk in! From the cowhides on the walls to the design of the chairs, this cosy, wood-panelled restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy some great quality meat, cooked to perfection. As you’d expect, there are plenty of steaks on the menu, but their burgers are enormous, juicy and cooked how you want them, too. Try the Black & Blue, with a kick of Cajun seasoning and tangy blue cheese – delicious!
7Bone Burger Co.
Portswood Road is home to a variety of restaurants – one of those being the city’s branch of 7Bone Burger Co. With its exposed brickwork and distressed walls, the place has the American diner feel nailed – and these are definitely burgers of the dirty variety! You’ll find plenty of beef, chicken and meat-free options on the menu, along with smaller sliders for those with less of an appetite. If you want something that tastes truly decadent, we recommend the Robert Johnston: a tender beef patty topped with plenty of cheese, truffled garlic mushrooms and an earthy truffle mayo.
Smugglers on Carlton Place may look pretty uninspiring from the outside, but step through the door and you’ll find yourself transported into a beautiful nautically-inspired bar and restaurant with plenty of natural wood and exposed brickwork. The menu’s inspired by all manner of global cuisines, and with an enclosed beer garden out the back, it’s a great place to soak up some sun on National Burger Day! If you like things spicy, give their signature burger a go: the beef patty is smothered in fiery green and pink peppercorn sauce, crumbled Stilton and a harissa mayo that packs a real punch.
Burgers are a staple on many a pub menu, and The Rockstone on Bevois Valley Road is no different. This cosy, award-winning place – complete with outdoor terrace – is well-known for its ample spirits selection (over 200 different choices) and its dedication to craft and local beers, as well as for its burgers. Every single one of their beef-based concoctions contains a whopping 10oz (more than 280g) of prime local beef mince, seasoned and cooked to perfection before being encased in a fluffy, milk-glazed brioche bun with the toppings of your choice. They do a great line in vegan burgers too – like the Paint It Black, topped with black garlic mayo, spinach, and vegan mozzarella.
Bar-restaurant by day and party venue by night, Oxford Street’s Medbar has a fun and relaxed vibe – and an incredible cocktail menu, too! But during the day, it’s the food that draws people in: a family-friendly offering of tapas, grills, paella and salads that offers a great Mediterranean experience. One of the highlights of their menu, for us, is their juicy 6oz homemade burgers, which fall somewhere between the dirty burger and gourmet experience. Try the Mama Mia, topped with beautifully crisp turkey bacon, gooey melted mozzarella, salad, tangy BBQ sauce and a pungent garlic mayo.
