What makes a great burger for you? Is it a classic, simple patty topped with cheese, or do you prefer something with a mountain of toppings that’s seriously messy to eat? Is a juicy beef burger your thing, or would you prefer a grilled chicken breast, something more exotic like wild boar, or a flavour-packed vegetarian or vegan patty?
Whatever your preference, rest assured that you’ll find great burgers in Taunton and Bridgwater that’ll satisfy every craving. And here are our top Taunton and Bridgwater burger picks…
Eat The Bird
Coal Orchard in Taunton’s Eat The Bird opened in mid-2017, serving up no fewer than 11 different chicken burger choices. With plenty of natural light, a contemporary, minimalist interior and even outdoor seating, it’s a fun and relaxed place to eat… The chicken fillets are marinated overnight in spiced buttermilk before the coating is added and it’s fried till crisp – and we love their topping combinations. Try the Katsu Curry burger, with Japanese curry sauce, lettuce, spring onion and radish – or try one of their veggie options (the tortilla crumbed halloumi is definitely moreish!)
Hubbox Taunton
Head to the corner of North St and St James St in Taunton for a trip to Hubbox: an amazing restaurant set over two floors that’s packed with dark wood and exposed brickwork to give it a rustic-meets-industrial vibe. It’s both dog- and child-friendly, meaning you can take the whole family, and their beef burgers are a thing of beauty. Made using 21-day dry-aged beef, options include the incredible Smokey B, topped with slow-cooked beef brisket, Swiss cheese, onions, mayo, mustard and slaw. Not a beef fan? There are plenty of chicken, veggie and vegan options to choose from, too…
Cow n Bun
Cow n Bun on Bridgwater’s High Street opened in late 2017, and has been dishing up some truly epic dirty burgers ever since. Food porn at its finest, the menu is divided into three: single or double burgers, or a couple of triple patty options for those with a heartier appetite. Can’t decide between chicken or beef? Go for the Cow n Chicken: a steak patty AND a buttermilk chicken thigh, with baconnaise, pickles, double cheese and BBQ sauce. Wash it down with one of a regularly changing selection of homemade shakes, with flavours like Jaffa Brownie and Mint Aero on offer…
Bare Grills
BBQ restaurant Bare Grills on Taunton’s Bridge Street is one of three in the South West – you’ll find their other venues in Exeter and Bristol. Their hand-pressed burgers are at the very heart of their food offering, with a variety of beef, veggie and chicken options to choose from. Prepare to get messy, as they’re very much of the dirty burger variety… Our shout out goes to the Filthy Pig: two juicy beef patties topped with plenty of melted cheese and bacon, plus their own BBQ sauce – and the crowning glory of a heap of 14-hour hickory smoked pulled pork that really does melt in the mouth.
Cosy Club
Cosy Club on Taunton’s Corporation Street is a beautiful, beautiful place. Every wall is packed with pictures and mirrors, meaning there’s plenty to look at, and there’s always an amazing buzz at whatever time of day you visit. The menu’s pretty varied, with sandwiches and paninis, tapas dishes, curries, pastas and more all vying for your attention…but fans of a meal between two buns will be spoilt for choice when it comes to their burgers. For something a bit different, we love The Scarlet Pimpernel: a beef patty topped with fiery chorizo, lettuce and tomato, as well as a piquant pimento cheese and a moreish bacon and chipotle chilli jam…
