Often, when people think “kebab”, they think of late-night fast food joints. And there’s no denying that some of these places are amazing (we’ve included one below), but there are so many more variants on the kebab than purely the doner!
Turkish, Greek and Indian cuisines are all known for their tasty kebabs: the sweet red pepper-packed Turkish Adana, the smoky marinated Greek souvlaki and the spiced Indian minced meat sheekh kebabs are all incredibly different, but equally delicious.
So, with this huge amount of variety in mind, we’ve created a guide to Swindon’s best kebabs from across the globe…
Not tried Lebanese food before? Head to Arabian Nights on Victoria Road to rectify that right away! Luxuriously decorated in rich reds and dark wood, there’s even an outdoor shisha terrace – complete with blankets to keep off the chill in the colder months. When it comes to the food, the mixed grill is the best way to get the full Lebanese kebab experience, with a combination of minced lamb kufta kebabs, plus marinated chicken and lamb cubes, all charcoal-grilled to perfection.
The Jewel in the Crown
Also on Victoria Road is Indian restaurant The Jewel in the Crown – a stalwart of the Swindon food scene that’s been there for over 30 years, and with free car parking to boot. It’s a truly stunning restaurant packed with luxurious fabrics, impressive chandeliers and gilt-framed mirrors, and the service is second to none. Start with the burger-like shami kebabs: fragrantly spiced lamb patties served with a cooling homemade mint sauce and salad. Or persuade your table to go for their tapas-style menu, which includes both their tender chicken tikka and succulent lamb sheek kebab, along with a whole host of other dishes.
Mela Restaurant is an enormous Indian restaurant on…you’ve guessed it, Victoria Road, in the heart of Swindon’s Old Town: a sumptuously-decorated place that’s known for both traditional and more innovative Indian dishes. And those dishes include some seriously delicious kebabs. Go for a juicy traditional chicken or lamb tikka or lamb sheek kebab if you’re after an old favourite. Or, if you’re looking to try something new and different, check out the chef signature collection starters section of the menu: we recommend the tiger prawn skewers marinated in a fragrant, zingy blend of lemon zest, ginger, garlic and a mix of spices.
Over on Faringdon Road, Greek Olive is a small, unfussy and unpretentious restaurant that’s perfect for a casual bite to eat. With views overlooking GWR Park and its own greenery and shining white walls inside, it’ll instantly transport you to the Aegean – and the food will do the same. Alongside other traditional Greek favourites like kleftico and moussaka, their grill menu gives you the chance to experience authentic Greek souvlaki kebabs – your choice of zesty marinated kebab skewered and grilled with onions, peppers and cherry tomatoes. For meat-eaters there’s a choice of chicken, lamb or pork – while swordfish and halloumi options cater for pescatarians and vegetarians respectively.
Finally, what would a list of Swindon’s best kebabs be without including Caner’s Kebab? This old-school kebab van in Hibberds Yard is nothing fancy, but it’s renowned for its huge portion sizes and great prices. Their spit-grilled meats can be cooked on the hot plate after carving if you want your meat crispier, and there’s a choice of salads with which to pile your pitta high, too. The perfect place if you’re looking for a late night bite to eat.
