Birmingham is a city full of a diverse range of restaurants from takeaways to Michelin Star, and of course is well known for its curry houses. Vegan, vegetarian and health food eateries are on the increase now that people are becoming much more conscious of what they are putting into their bodies.
You cannot get more natural than this totally plant-based restaurant, the very first in Birmingham and slap bang in the centre. With the philosophy of using only natural and sustainable ingredients with a twist of both modern and classic, Natural Bar & Kitchen is already a winner in the health stakes. Try Tofu Fish and Chips, Ramen Bowls and their ‘Natural Burger’ made with black beans. Side dishes are all amazingly healthy with ‘kaleslaw’ and kimchi all made on site. Yummy desserts come straight from the chiller and are all plant-based. The Pistachio and Rose Torte is to die for.
Alternatively, hit the buffet self-service for raw, hot and cold dishes, charged by weight.
Perfectly positioned in the Indoor Market, right next to the fresh fish stall, you will find Otoro Sushi. To say it is tiny is an understatement, only a handful of tables but an excellent takeaway service. You can taste how fresh the fish and seafood is, and so beautifully presented by the Itamae (highly skilled sushi chef). You would have to search high and low for such reasonably priced sushi dishes. Mixed platters are available for an inclusive price. Try the Salmon Teriyaki Gunkan with Dragon Roll and Eel, a very stunning dish, taste and presentation-wise.
Ultimate Vegan Café
This really is a strictly vegan eatery, and the only one in Lichfield. Expect ‘fishless fish cakes’, savoury pancakes and a large range of cakes and pastries as well as snacks and other meals, such as 5-bean chilli. There are also gluten free options like tasty teacakes and breads. You can even take your dog along who will be spoilt with vegan dog treats!
With Vietnamese food freshly prepared here on site every day, you will immediately notice the wonderful flavours. Soups and salads are all low calorie and the punchy flavours will delight any diner. As Vietnamese cooking involves little or no dairy, this place is a haven for vegans and vegetarians. Pho is also accredited by Coeliac UK, no mean achievement. The salads, noodle soups and curries can be made with or without meat, which is great for a group of friends with varying tastes. Children also love Pho, particularly the noodles!
Housed in a delightful old building, the ambiance of this café hits you as soon as you walk through the door. There is a large selection of both meat, vegetarian and vegan meals, along with a juice and smoothie bar. The breakfast menu at Boston Tea Party offers something for everyone with a lot of healthy options as well as the standard English breakfast. The ‘Super Salad’ is a popular lunchtime dish which includes avocado, mango, radish, sprouting seeds, sugar snap peas, leaves, carrot, nuts & seeds. There is a choice of adding other items to the basic meal if you like meat and cheese. Another venue where dogs are welcome.
